PSP Portals on PS Vita

Post by Dessel575 » Sat Feb 28, 2015 5:37 am

Hi guys,
on Friday, I remembered this thing I had once (2009) considered very cool. The thing I'm talking about are PSP Portals. There were many of them - all kinds of Windows OS's, Xbox, Wii, Nintendo DS, iOS, OS X, or web browsers, like Chrome, Safari or Mozilla. There's a good thread containing a list of them on the official US PlayStation Forums, and although all the links are dead, it gives you a good idea.http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/ ... -p/3873633
This post is not about something ground-breaking, but I still decided that it was worth posting here.

Note: This is not related to the WebKit exploit, so it works on FW 3.36 too.

Here's an introduction consisting of what I know about them. I'm not an expert. I may be wrong.
There are 2 types:
- First type, you copy them to the root of your PSP, then go to browser and you enter address, which usually looks like this: file:/[foldername]/index.htm. Then the portal loads and you can play with it in your browser.
- And second type you copy stuff to PSP/RADIOPLAYER and PSP/COMMON. This type of portals is (I think) more complex, and can be launched from XMB. (Network->Internet Radio->[here])

That said, PSP portals on PSP are completely legal.

Anyway, I was thinking, would they work on PS Vita? I downloaded some of them and here's what I've found out.
The first type works. If you upload it somewhere, you can even launch it (e.g. this http://hackinformer.com/hackinformer/pspwxp102/) in your Vita browser. You can see the result here:

It works in TN-V too (same procedure like on PSP, I talked about it in the introduction), but I think that using Vita's browser is way cooler, even though there's a downside that you must be connected to the internet.
This portal is called "pspWxp v1.02". It has XP in its name, and it looks like Vista. I think it's because there were various themes for it (even Linux and Win7), and the version I found contained Vista theme.
Version 1.02 works best on Vita (latest stable version 3.5 doesn't even load), plus higher versions contain games in flash, so that sucks for us and our Vitas. I would like to find a version 2, I haven't tried that one yet.
Download links of the 3 pspWxp versions (1.02, 3.5, 4 beta): https://mega.co.nz/#F!3N41gQ7S!XOZG2PO7NpgjW-705_qZ8w

The second type works too, but it can be launched only via TN-V as far as I know. You "install it" by copying certain files to their respective folder.

The portal you can see in the pictures is called "PSVita 1.0", and you can find everything about it, including the download link and instructions, here: http://endlessparadigm.com/forum/showth ... ?tid=27850

There are much more PSP Portals launchable on Vita than I mentioned in this post. If you're interested in this, prepare to find a lot of dead download links. Check out this site if you want some portals, that are already uploaded: http://pspportalz.blogspot.cz/

TL;DR
- PSP Portals can be launched on PS Vita, even on latest FW
- You can launch them either via TN-V (under Internet Radio or Web Browser) or Vita's Web Browser
- They're basically dead :(

See you next time. ;)
