A Newbies Compilation of Guides for first Xbox.

Post by hackinformer » Thu Sep 04, 2014 1:18 am

A Newbies Compilation of Guides:
Everything you will need to know about your after chip process, including detailed EvoX installation, upgrading your harddrive and How-to’s about loading application and games to your harddrive.

Note: This is a compilation of numerous guides, all compiled into one with minor things changed or added. If you know NOTHING about the Xbox, this guide is for you.

Note2: This guide is only used after a mod chip installation. This will not cover mod chip installations. There are just too many out there.

Tools Needed: (If you can not find these on xbox-scene.com, you will have to locate them elsewhere, do not ask anyone at xbox-scene or myself where.)
Evox software
FTP Program (I like flashFXP)
Xiso, isox creator, simple x iso, etc… (I like Xiso, others may disagree)
DVD-X software
xhdprepa.exe

Procedure:

After you have your mod chip in your xbox, and you are sure that it works, open Evox.ini that comes with the evox dashboard. This is the congiuration file. If needed, open it with wordpad.

This is what mine looks like currently.

You can use this one, or edit it and use it, or edit your original to setup the configuration how you would like it to be. I recommend saving this somewhere on your computer after edit, you will need it later.

Rundown of Evox.ini:
[Misc]

AutoLaunchGames = No
AutoLaunchDVD = No
DVDPlayer = "f:\applications\dvdx\default.xbe"
AutoLaunchAudio = Yes
#AudioPlayer = "c:\msxboxdash.xbe"
MSDashBoard = "c:\msxboxdash.xbe"
UseFDrive = Yes
SkinName = Evox2
IGR = Yes

Most of this is self-explanitory. At this stage, it is not important, however you will want this as we progress.

[Network]

SetupNetwork = Yes
StaticIP = No
Ip = 192.168.1.103
Subnetmask = 255.255.255.0
Defaultgateway = 192.168.0.1
DNS1 = 0.0.0.0
DNS2 = 0.0.0.0

This is VERY important. If you change nothing else, change this! MAKE SURE SetupNetwork says YES. This will allow your computer to talk to the Xbox. This is NECESSARY. If you use a router in your home, find the address of your computer, open a dos prompt and type winipcfg (windows 2000 or higher) or open start->run and type ipconfig (Windows 98 or lower) and your computer ip should be shown. If your IP address is shown as 192.168.1.1XX (X can be any number) then leave this config as is. If your IP is 192.168.0.1XX then change it to 192.168.0.103. (I will be using .103 as the last digits in the xbox ip later in this tutorial, so if you choose to change it, remember that it will be 103 later on.)

[clock] can be left alone. No need to look at it.

[FTP]

Enable = Yes
Password = xbox
IGR = Yes

This is very important as well. Enable must say YES and leave password as xbox. This lets us FTP to the xbox.

[Menu]

Section "Root"
{
Item "Launch DVD",@14
Item "MS Dashboard",@3
Item "Reboot",@5
Item "Power Off",@10
Section "System Utils"
{
Item "Settings",@9

# Section "Install Menu"
# {
# Item "Install 4043",@210
# Item "Action 11",@211
# Item "Action 12",@212
# }
}
Section "Launch Menu"
{
Section "Games"
{
# Item "Invaders","f:\games\invaders\default.xbe"
Line "- Auto Items -",2
SortStart
AutoAddItem "f:\games\"
SortEnd
# SortAll
}
Section "Apps"
{
# Item "DVDX","f:\Applications\dvdx\default.xbe"
SortAll
AutoAddItem "f:\applications\"
}
}
}

At this step, most of this is not necessary, but I will help you go over it now, so we can save it and get it out of the way so we can use it later.

This structure is set so that on the main menu, you will see a tree similar to this

Launch DVD
MS Dashboard
Reboot
Power Off
System Utils -> Settings
-> Flash Bios
-> Backup
-> Skins
Launch Menu -> Games -> Invaders
 Apps -> DVDX

Now, everything on the config is now fine until we get to games in your menu. You wont have space invaders, but any game you do have we can have the dashboard auto list later, detecting what games you have and adding them, along with your applications.

Change it to look like this:
Section "Launch Menu"
{
Section "Games"
{
# Item
Line "- Auto Items -",2
SortStart
AutoAddItem "f:\games\"
SortEnd
# SortAll
}
Section "Apps"
{
# Item
Line "- Auto Items -",2
SortStart
AutoAddItem "f:\applications\"
SortEnd
# SortAll

}
}
}

Note: "f:\games\" and "f:\applications\" is ONLY for those upgrading the harddrive. If you are not planning to upgrade the harddrive, change f: to e:.

Everything else in the config file can be left alone. Save this file in a folder with all your evox files that came with the dashboard, and in a serperate location, preferably on the desktop for easy reference.

Using Xiso, or any other iso making program listed at xbox-scene, create an iso using the entire folder that all the evox files were in, including the recent config file. After the iso is made, burn it to a cd-rw, dvd(- or +)r or dvd(- or +)rw using any iso burning program you wish. A CD-R WILL NOT WORK. Now keep this disc, it will be used later.

Before going on, turn on the xbox, insert the disc made with evox on it, and turn off the xbox. Now turn on the xbox again and you should see a new screen you have never seen before. use your ftp program to connect to 192.168.1.103 (your xbox IP) using the password xbox. You should see a bunch of folders now. Transfer C: to your computer for safe keeping.

IF YOU DO NOT PLAN ON INSTALLING A NEW HARDDRIVE, SKIP THIS STEP.

Turn off your computer and put the new harddrive you want in your xbox, into your computer and restart. Open xhdprepa.exe and locate which drive is the one you want to put in the xbox. (Choose wisely or you will loose everything on your computer harddrive) If the drive is new, just select under zeroing, only the first 4096 sectors. If the harddrive has been used before, zero the entire drive. If you have to zero the entire drive, it will take a long time, so you will have to be patient.

When you are done zeroing the drive, open your xbox, unscrew the old drive and put this one in where the old one was and plug the power and IDE cables into the new one. Yes, its that simple.

Heres the fun part. You have to format the drive. After the new drive is in place, turn on the xbox, insert the disc made with evox on it, and turn off the xbox. Now turn on the xbox again and you should see the exov dash again.

Now most of the credit for this section is going to Cheule for his tutorial on formatting the drive. I will change a few small things to help you understand better.

Launch Evolution-X Dashboard off CDRW/DVD-R. If you drive doesn't read it the first time, don't give up. Turn the Xbox off completely while the disk is still in it, and then back on. If it doesn't boot again, keep trying. It may take a dozen or more tries.
With Evox Dash booted off CDRW/DVD-R, connect through FlashFXP (Windows) or Transmit (MacOS).
You will now need to send "Raw FTP Commands" with your FTP client. You may have to hunt through the pull down menus for an option called "send raw FTP command." (I have also found that you can right click on the empty space on the xbox side.) Send the following "Raw FTP Command" with your FTP client:
Formatpath \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1
The FTP app will echo a hard drive key (display a long number in a dialog box). Use that key for the next command.
FormatDrive 'the number' (no quotes)
Do the same as above for the next few raw commands:
Formatpath \Device\Harddisk0\Partition2
FormatDrive 'the number'
Formatpath \Device\Harddisk0\Partition6
FormatDrive 'the number'
Your drive is now formatted and ready to use. The X:, Y:, and Z: drives are made automagically.
If you followed this correctly, you should be set to start transferring data. Using the guide written by Xantium, copy the files you saved on your computer from the xbox harddrive C: and all the files from evox, including the edited config file.

8) Open FlashFXP
The screen is divided in 2 parts. On the left side you should get the content of your PC harddrive. To switch between ftp/hdd use the top button the rightside.

09) On the rightside , click the first topbutton and choose "quick connect".

10) Connect to your Xbox
Fill in the IP (you got from the EvoX in step6). The username is always "xbox" , the password is standard "xbox" unless you changed it in your evox.ini file.

11) On the rightside of Flashfxp you should see this :

12) Backup your Xbox harddrive
On the leftside (PC harddrive) go somewhere with alot of free webspace. (300MB should be enough) Select "C" & "E" on the righside right-click and select "transfer". It will now copy the C & E drive of your xbox to your PC HD. (it can take some mins).
Make sure to keep this as backup if something goes wrong.

13) Enter the C directory on the Xbox harddrive (right side).
It should look like this.

14) The last file should be xboxdash.xbe (on a 4033 console the file should be 1.33MB , this might be different on older or newer xbox dashboard versions)

IMPORTANT:: if you have a special "hacked" bios that boots evoxdash.xbe (or yboxdash.xbe on some old bioses) instead of xboxdash.xbe you will need to do small changed to this guide. (special comment has been added to this tutorial or you can also check out this guide for more info).
The latest generation of bioses with the "change bootfile v2 or v3" hack (X2 4972+ , evox 3.6+) will try to boot evoxdash.xbe first and if it fails it will boot xboxdash.xbe. I added special comnment to this tutorial for these new bioses.
15 (if your hacked bios also boots to evoxdash.xbe you don't have to do this)) Select the xboxdash.xbe file , right-click and select "Transfer As".

16 (if your hacked bios also boots to evoxdash.xbe you don't have to do this)) Fill in "msxboxdash.xbe" and click "ok"

17) Now go to the directory on your PC harddrive where EvoX is. (If you only have the .iso file you will have to extract it first - tutorial).
You will now have a :
* evox.ini file : make sure to open the file with notepad and configure all the settings (most important your network settings - the standard settings of all the other options should be ok).
* default.xbe : rename this file to xboxdash.xbe (or if your hacked bios boots to evoxdash.xbe , rename it to evoxdash.xbe)
When you done that copy (transfer) these 2 files to your C on the Xbox harddrive.
Evox.ini will just copy and for xboxdash.xbe it will ask if you want to overwrite the file , say "yes" (it will not ask to overwrite if you use evoxdash.xbe) .
You don't have to transfer the "skin" & "bios" directory. "skin" is used if you want to install new skins for EvoX , if u don't copy the skin directory you will just get the default skin.
The "bios" directory is only needed if you will flash your onboard bios (tutorial) or lpc modchip (tutorial) later on.
note: It doesn't harm thought if u move both the skins & bios directory to the C drive of your xbox.

18 (if your hacked bios also boots to evoxdash.xbe you shouldn't do this) ) Now go back where you transfered msxboxdash.xbe on your PC harddrive.(step 15). And retransfer the file (with it's new filename) to the C of your xbox harddrive. (this will allow you to go the original microsoft dashboard from the evolutionx dashboard).

19 ) This is how your C drive on your Xbox should look like (if bios booting from xboxdash.xbe). Your drive will probably not have the "backup" directory unless you already installed evox before.

If your hacked bios boots from xboxdash.xbe :
xboxdash.xbe is the default.xbe from the EvoX release
msxboxdash.xbe is the old xboxdash.xbe from your C xboxdrive.
evox.ini is coming from the EvoX release
If your hacked bios (also) boots from evoxdash.xbe :
xboxdash.xbe didn't change (still the original MS dashboard)
evoxdash.xbe is the default.xbe from the EvoX release.
evox.ini is coming from the EvoX release.
20) Remove the CD , turn off your xbox and restart.
It should now boot up to the EvolutionX dashboard.
If it doesn't work your xbox isn't doomed , you can still axx the the xbox harddrive with the CD. (and if needed restore with the backup of C & E you made).

On the xbox F: or D: partition, create 2 folders. One called games and one called applications. This is where you will transfer your games and applications to.

Now you are all set to play around with your xbox however you want, installing games and applications you find.

Note: Don’t use xbox live anymore ;) If you want to play with people over the internet, use tunneling software that you can research at xbox-scene.com and keep checking back to xbox-scene.com for many more tutorials and news about xbox.

Tutorial written, compiled, touched up, oraganised, etc… by Snakers (heyitssnake@hotmail.com for questions)

Credits go to Xantium, Cheule and everyone at xbox-scene. (without these people, many of us would be lost)

You should be prepared to begin transferring data if you follow these instructions carefully. Copy the files you stored on your computer from the Xbox hard drive C: and all of the files from evox, including the modified config file, using the instructions provided by Xantium. bitlife
